April, 2008
The Old Dominion University Association of University Administrators held their annual year-end program on April 16, including recognition of the J. Worth Pickering Administrator of Year Award recipient and years of service recognition for all Faculty Administrators with five-year increment milestone years of service.
Dr. Leigh L. Butler, director of the teacher education services and advising in the Darden College of Education, is the 2008 recipient of the Association of University Administrators J. Worth Pickering Administrator Award. Dr. Butler holds degrees from North Carolina State University (B.A.), The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (M.S. Ed.), and Old Dominion University (Ph.D.). She has served as a public school teacher and coach, alternative school principal, and an adjunct faculty member at Old Dominion University prior to accepting a full-time position in 2001.
In their nomination letter, Dr. Butler's colleagues wrote that her professional accomplishments make her a unique and outstanding administrator, with endless passion and dedication to teaching. When faced with adversity, she is willing to step up to the plate and do what is necessary for the good of the university, her students, and staff. Her teamwork mentality is evident in both her dedication to her professional work and in her personal endeavors. She consistently sets goals and will stop at nothing to achieve these goals. Her commitment to administrating, advising, teaching, and high quality research is deliberately executed, and is effective in accomplishing outcome objectives that demonstrate why Dr. Leigh L. Butler truly represents the qualities of the J. Worth Pickering Administrator of the Year Award.
The years of service recognition for Faculty Administrators was implemented last year. This year, the AUA honored all faculty administrators and faculty professionals who achieved a service year milestone during calendar year 2007. Each honoree received a certificate and years of service pin.
