Delta Sigma Lambda

History of DSL
A small group of mature women, having returned to school after years of delay in their formal education, assembled at The Norfolk Division of William and Mary College on February 14, 1956 and organized the "Twenty-Five Plus" Club. Originally the purpose of the Club was for encouragement and moral support for each other because they were a small minority group among many younger students on campus.

On March 2, 1956, the "Twenty-Five Plus" Club voted to become a sorority. Its objectives were duty, service, and loyalty to others, thus they adopted the name Delta Sigma Lambda. The sorority was accepted by the school's Intercollegiate Council. Dr. Ruth Harrell was chosen as sponsor and served until her retirement from Old Dominion University in 1969.
